Music: Something new
2026-06-20
Finally replaced my MIDI controller with a music workstation/keyboard. It's a Roland FA-08 and my plan is to upload to a sketchbook playlist on Soundcloud as I learn the ins and outs of how to create with it. I'm excited to get started and it has made quite the difference in my mindset regaining focus on creating music again.
Tech: Solar Power - Part 1
2026-06-20
With the heat of summer approaching fast, we've decided to invest in adding solar power to the property. We had a power outage recently due to weather and it was a great opportunity to test out equipement I had been ordering in already. It was exciting to see what we could run off the few I set up for the test! I've set up about 25% of the panels so far and will be hooking them up to the inverter soon with plans to install the rest of the equipment over the next couple of weeks. It also alleviates some anxiety over losing power and being a full-time remote employee. The ROI is more than just via the power bill when you have to start accounting for a loss of work hours.
Tech: Tunnelvision with a dash of "look a squirrel"
2026-06-14
There hasn't really been any posts recently. Continuing to update the scaffolding of the site to be a more versatile publishing platform but as with many scaffolding changes - nothing is visible to call out. There is another project that has my interest lately though and hopefully I can have a preview or an early-adopter version online before much longer so I can talk more about it.
Outdoors: Apples to Apples
2026-06-13
We've got apple trees now! I recently planted two of our favorites in the area that I've desginated as the orchard. It's just a start with more trees planned but it's exciting because it looks like we have one solo apple on the Gala apple tree already.
Outdoors: Berry Patch - Part 1
2026-04-11
Planted the first part of the berry patch this weekend. A set of Brightwell blueberry bushes are now at the start of our backyard nature trail. Looking forward to when they start producing!
Food: Birthday food selection
2026-04-10
My son's birthday is today!! I haven't a clue where the time has gone as he starts high school this year. When asked, he had only one request for his birthday dinner: smoked spare ribs. He loves it when I fire up the smoker but the kid has a special place for ribs.
The details
Hickory smoked with a home-made dry rub, aproximately 2 hours at 225 F, mopped with melted butter and brown sugar then wrapped for about 2 more hours at 225 F. To finish them, I unwrapped them and threw some more coals in for a high heat finish until they had the desired char and glaze. They rested for 30 minutes before they were served and vanished in less than that time.
Sci-Fi: Apparently I woke up in an episode of Black Mirror
2026-04-10
This is more of a Life post than a Sci-Fi post but I will take the opportunity to say that I prefer my dystopian societies to be found in the realms of science fiction.
Life: Once upon a time and hopefully, again, one day

It's that time of year and the hummingbirds have found their way back!
